Garage Door Spring Replacement Serving Yuma, AZ

A torsion spring does the lifting on your garage door. The opener only guides the door and finishes the motion. When the spring breaks, the door goes from light to dead weight. The fix is to pull the old spring off the shaft and put a correctly matched one on. For a single door that typically runs $150 to $350, parts and labor included.

Signs the spring has let go

Usually it's obvious. The door won't rise, or it rises an inch or two and quits. The opener hums and strains but the door stays put. Lift it by hand and it feels far heavier than it should, because your arms are now doing the work the spring used to do.

A broken spring can look like an opener problem, but the opener is just being asked to haul a door it was never built to lift on its own. Replacing the opener won't fix that. The spring is what needs the work.

What's going on up at the shaft

The spring sits on a torsion shaft above the door. It's wound tight, and that stored twist is what counterbalances the door's weight. Cables run from the drums at each end of the shaft down to the bottom of the door. When the shaft turns, the cables wind and the door lifts.

Once the spring breaks, that balance is gone. The replacement has to be the right spring for your door and has to go onto the shaft the right way round for its position. A spring installed backwards won't balance the door correctly.

What we do on the job

We start by confirming the spring is what failed. Then we take the old spring off the torsion shaft and slide the correctly oriented replacement into its place. We use a stepladder to reach the shaft and an adjustable wrench for the hardware.

The winding is the part that has to be exact. We wind the new spring in quarter-turn increments, up to the number of turns the spring manufacturer specifies, and we count every one rather than winding by feel.

While the shaft area is open, we look over the cables and rollers on that door. Anything else that's worn gets its own line on the quote, and you hear about it before we touch it. If it can wait, we say so.

What it costs

Replacing the spring on one garage door, parts and labor, falls in the $150 to $350 range, and that typical range is something we can quote you on the phone. The exact number is settled once we've looked at the door, since a different size or type of door takes a different spring.

If other parts turn up damaged once we're at the shaft, those are separate line items, written down before we do the work. Nothing gets added without your say-so.
